Training Tips: Chewing

The most important step you can take to curtail your dog's problem chewing is to strongly fixate her on proper chew toys. Proper chew toys include Nylabones, Gumabones, and Rhino toys.

To fixate your dog on these items, you must make the toys a part of all play and fun activities between you and her. Playfully toss these toys around to bring them to life. Encourage her to fetch these toys and praise her when she shows any interest in them. When you greet her, give her the toys. When you leave, give her the toys. To create additional interest in these toys, try soaking the Nylabone and Gumabone in beef or chicken broth. Consider dabbing a little peanut butter or cheese in the center of the Rhino or Kong toys. Whenever your puppy is around items you don't want her to chew, make sure you have sprayed the items with bitter apple within the past few hours. This needs to be done daily until she is fully trained. Also be prepared to intercept her before she actually chews the wrong things, in a fashion sufficient to startle, but not scare her. A firm "no" or sharp clap should be sufficient. This should have the effect of stopping her intended chewing and gives you the opportunity to re-direct her to the acceptable chew items. Make sure to always encourage and praise her for chewing the correct items.

Feeding a premium quality kibble and making certain your dog gets enough exercise is also very important.
