Christine Williams
Program Analyst/ABC Certified Dog Trainer

I have always had a love for dogs my entire life. Four years ago I purchased a beautiful Rottweiler puppy named Kaiser. As I started to train him, I just fell in love with the whole training experience. A little over a year ago I started to look into dog training courses. As I was searching the web, I fell upon ABC. As I read through the website I decided that this was the college for me! ABC has taught me so much that I cannot wait to get started in my new endeavor. My short-term goal is to either start working part-time or do volunteer work with a dog training facility. I would like to absorb as much knowledge as I can in order to apply it to my long term goal, which is to have my own doggy day care/training business. Thank you Animal Behavior College!

Antonin Bohac
ABC Certified Dog Trainer and Owner of "Silent Knight K-9’s, LLC"

Let me first start out by thanking ABC; I had a very tricky schedule to work around and ABC was great about working around that for me. My name is Antonin Bohac and I have been training dogs since the age of 16. I worked as an apprentice under Barbara Canfield, master trainer and owner of Vom Amaris K-9, one of the nation’s most recognized Doberman kennels. I had no idea what I was getting into at the time. I went to ask for work around the kennel and farm after school for some extra money; she didn’t have any openings so I asked if I could meet the dogs, and that’s when it all started. She brought out the love for dogs in me.

I’ve learned you can never have too many tools in your toolbox so I contacted ABC. Obedience training is fun and is the foundation for all, but I’m and adrenaline junkie and have crossed over into the Schutzhund and personal protection field as well. I have three German Shepherds, a rescue Rottie, and pictured here is my inspiration, Guiness, my four-year-old Border collie. She is a certified therapy dog who loves to catch Frisbees. I know it’s an insult to dogs in general, but Guiness is “almost human”.

What do I plan to do now, with the knowledge ABC has given me? I plan on holding obedience classes in the warmer months, and train my Shepherds as handicapped assistant K-9’s. Training is a lot more fun when doing it for a good reason. My business is Silent Knight K-9’s L.L.C. I am located in a small rural town in mid-Missouri, and will be providing a trained friend for people restricted to wheelchairs. They need to feel safe and secure and that’s where my training and dogs will come into play.

If you are looking for a career in dog training or just want to learn every possible angle in training, I highly recommend ABC to anyone. Like I said, they worked with me and my schedule and I still came out on top. If you feel a calling for man’s best friend, call ABC and get started. It has been a joy and will continue to be.

Jennifer Carr
Owner of "Simply Smart Canines"

After attending a Working Dog expo at a local fair, I began to look into going to school for a dog-related career. Dogs have always been my whole life but I never thought it could be a career! I decided on ABC after talking to people about online dog training programs and hearing that it was one of the most widely recognized programs. I got through the book work very fast because I hit it hard! I was eager to get all the knowledge I could the fastest I could! I started the externship right after I got married but had a lapse in it when I got pregnant. I worked right up until I was nine months pregnant and finished after our daughter was born. Now I have started my own business, Simply Smart Canines. It focuses on giving classes in the client's home where the problems happen!

Audrey DiMarco
Certified Veterinary Technician and ABC Certified Dog Trainer

I have served as a veterinary technician for 10 years, and through working in different venues of the profession, I have become passionate about people and their relationship with their dogs. My desire is to improve the bond between owners and their dogs. I chose Animal Behavior College as my source of education because their reputation preceded them in a wonderful way, and I admired the organization and professionalism of their online learning program. My primary objective in getting certified as a dog trainer was to gain the knowledge and expertise I felt necessary to give our veterinary clients professional advice. I do anticipate starting up my own business and working part-time in conjunction with my career as a veterinary technician in the near future. In the meantime, I continue to use my knowledge as I work at North Mecklenburg Animal Hospital in Charlotte, NC to give owners the information they need to have a balanced and obedient dog they can thoroughly enjoy.

Heather Lipps
ABC Certified Dog Trainer and Student

Growing up, there was always a dog in the family. As a little girl, I remember putting my dog on a leash and teaching her how to sit, stay and lay down. I loved practicing with her and seeing what I could do. When I got a little older, I joined 4-H and enrolled in the Dog Project. I went to weekly sessions during the summer and learned how to teach my dog obedience and agility. I also participated in showmanship. I was in the county fair and the regional shows, and am proud to say I have four trophies! In high school, I decided that I wanted to be a dog trainer as a profession. I found the Animal Behavior College online and contacted them. Everyone was very easy to talk to and could answer all of the questions I had. I enrolled, and got all of my information-- I was so excited to start!

The ABC program teaches positive reinforcement techniques and is great for teaching problem solving. The program also teaches students how to teach humans and how to run classes. The externship and volunteer parts of the program are the most fun and rewarding parts of the program. You get hands-on learning and to work with a trainer like you may be one day! I graduated in about a year and I am so excited to get started! I am currently finishing a 4-year college program, but my goals include running my own business some day to offer group and private classes. I thank ABC for making it possible for students' dreams to come true!

Kent Hammit
High-End Electronic Consultant and Installation Specialist and ABC Certified Dog Trainer

After years spent in sales, and then later as a retail manager of a high end electronics chain in Florida, I found myself at 50-something looking for a rewarding and more enjoyable career. My parents had always included dogs and cats as family members since I was a child. I even studied for a career in veterinary medicine and graduated with a BS in Biology from George Mason University. Unfortunately, my resident state Virginia did not have a vet school and I was applying for limited slots at out-of-state vet schools... TOUGH! So I found myself successful at wholesale and retail sales.

When I relocated to South Florida in 1985 for a sales position with a wholesale distributor, I was introduced to a beautiful lady from Pittsburgh. I married Evelyn in 1987 and her large family had never kept animals while she was growing up! So as much as I wanted a dog, she always had good arguments to dissuade me. In 2005 she finally relented. Because we both worked, we wanted a 9+ month old crate-trained dog from a beagle breeder. Amazingly, a beagle kennel across state said that a 9-month-old male champion was available five miles from us! We arranged an introduction on Mother's Day 2005. I kind of expected that, given his breeding and championship status, he would be out of our price range. When my wife met Jack, his wagging tail and licks of her hand, she melted. I was floored when the breeder asked us for her puppy fee of $800.00!

When we took him home with us, he thought his life was over and was terrified. He had numerous issues. He had been crated with his sister, who had dominated him. He had limited experience with men my age, having been around women constantly. He was terrified of me from an early imprint experience but loved kids and older men. I could walk him on leash and he would go into "show ring mode" and behave perfectly, but would slink around me otherwise.

Having Jack in my life with his early "behavioral" challenges inspired my enrollment in ABC. I was looking for a rewarding "late in life" career change, and he inspired me! After researching many programs, the people at ABC were very professional, friendly, encouraging and the curriculum was in line with my training ideas and affordable.

During my ABC "apprenticeship" with mentor Lina Elkhof, Jack surprised me with his perfect responses to obedience cues and his generalization with other people. Lina told me that her previous experience with and opinion of beagles was that they were not so smart. Jack had totally changed her opinion about training beagles. He was the obvious "superstar" dog of the group and made me very proud!

My ideal plan for my ABC education would be to help families pick a dog that fits their lifestyle. I want more people to consider adoption and purchase of puppies only from respectable breeders. I would find it personally rewarding to prevent families from giving up their dogs. I have vast experience with public speaking and sales training. I look forward to group classes, AE group classes and working with teenagers at my local high school.

Manuela Connatser
ABC Certified Dog Trainer

I was born and raised in Germany. My life always included dogs; I was the dog walker in my neighborhood. I walked two dogs a day from different people and I also was a dog sitter for people on vacations. I always liked working with difficult dogs. I even cared for a blind dog. I always liked dogs and hoped one day I could follow my calling and work with dogs.

I made the move to the USA about 10 years ago. My husband was in the Army at that time and got stationed in Fort Irwin, California. This was my first time moving to the USA. After my husband retired from the Army, he started a job with a company in Charlotte, NC. I walked into a PetSmart store looking for some dog supplies and spoke with the trainer, Sharon. She was impressed with how well-behaved my dog was and, as we talked more, she made me realize that I could turn my passion into a career. It was in that moment that I knew that I wanted to be a dog trainer.

I went home and searched the internet for information, and found the Animal Behavior College. I really liked what I saw and I contacted them. Within one day, I was enrolled and on my way to becoming a dog trainer. I did not know what to expect. When I received my first correspondence I got so excited because not only were my course materials inside, they were accompanied by an ABC shirt and numerous toys and dog accessories. Throughout my entire time with ABC, I had very helpful and positive contact with everybody from the college. I knew that I made the right choice. After only eight months I graduated with honors. I was hired immediately by PetSmart as a dog trainer. My future goal is to work with service animals.

Thank you ABC for making my dreams come true.

Chris Mearkle
Custom Carpenter and ABC Certified Dog Trainer

I chose ABC because of their extensive range in dog behavior, health, breeds, business practice, and variety of training techniques. Though the program was challenging, I learned a lot, and found it fun to put my knowledge into practice. I am a custom carpenter and frequently travel to build skateboard parks. ABC was willing to work with me and my travel schedule to get the most out of the material at hand. I plan to continue my work with training dogs and am interested in additional courses to train search and rescue dogs as I believe this would be very rewarding.

My wife and I live with two cats and a dog. Our cat, Stubby, was taken away from her owner after her tail was cut off by one of their children. While Stubby is still trusting of humans, she is still very much a barn cat through & through. Our second cat, Stinky, was rescued from the Longmont Humane Society. She is the total opposite of Stubby and is the ultimate lap cat (though she is named Stinky for a reason!) Our dog Sierra was rescued from the Boulder Humane Society. Sierra is part Australian cattle dog and was very skittish at first. With positive reinforcement training, a lot of patience and love, Sierra has developed into a well-mannered, happy, fun-loving dog who truly brings joy to my life. It is this reason, to give a shelter animal a second chance, which made me want to become a trainer. I enjoy teaching others prospering training techniques as a way to share my passion and give dogs a second chance.

Joe Dwyer
Vice Chancellor for Administration for the Archdiocese of Newark and Owner of “Proclaiming Treasures (Helping Dogs Become Angels)”

I chose ABC after looking into several dog training companies. I found ABC to be the one that offered the most comprehensive training that focused on positive methods.

My experience throughout the ABC program has been nothing short of awesome. I was treated like a member of the ABC family from the very beginning as I received all of the information in a timely fashion. I also enjoyed the positive motivation style of training throughout the time I studied. I found the externship portion to be extremely valuable and rewarding.

I plan on starting my own dog training business and also integrating the principles I learned into another business as personal business coaching.

I have four dogs I share my life with and one of them that I rescued was the dog I brought through training during my ABC externship. It has not only improved his life dramatically but has provided me with additional motivation to use my education to benefit as many dogs and people as possible.

Jamie Watson
ABC Certified Dog Trainer and Trainer for "The Dog Nanny"

I chose ABC because of all the great reviews and great comments the school received. My experience with ABC was amazing. My Program Manager was always there to help me with any questions I had. My primary occupation is working as a dog trainer for The Dog Nanny.

David Church Jr.
ABC Certified Dog Trainer

I found myself looking for something more in life. I was a single guy living with a roommate who had a very young American Staffordshire mix puppy who was a joy to have in the house but was also a handful at the same time. We started training him how to do basic obedience cues and tricks such as sit, stay, down and high five. I soon realized that I found something wonderful in me that I loved to do – training dogs.

Since that day, I found a school that I absolutely loved (ABC) and began my training. It was such an easy program to follow and all the coordinators were fantastic and easy to work with. Ever since I have been having so much fun working with dogs and teaching people the tools they need to have control over their pets. Basically, I love what I do.

I chose ABC because it was very convenient and affordable. I had a great experience through ABC. I plan on opening my own training place someday.

Damon Mogensen
Journalism Student, Petsmart Support Manager, and ABC Certified Dog Trainer

Growing up in Wisconsin, dogs were a constant part of my life. The love I developed for dogs followed me into adulthood with the adoption of my Pit Bull mix, Daisy, and my Siberian husky, Thursday. While my two “kids” are my pride and joy, it wasn’t until a Boston terrier named Jasmine went into labor that I came to discover Animal Behavior College and the prospect of a dog training career. Jasmine is my mom’s dog, and she was having difficulties during labor. I knew nothing about it of course, so I jumped online at 3:00 AM, looking for any information I could find. Somehow I ended up at ABC’s website, and it was as if a light bulb went off! Eager to get out of the restaurant industry, I immediately requested information and, as they say, the rest is history.

The written part of the program proved to be exceptionally well put together. The curriculum was very in-depth and challenging. It was the externship that I found the most rewarding, however. I was assigned an amazing Mentor Trainer whose teaching and guidance will never be forgotten. A huge thank you to Vickie and the staff at Chippewa County Humane Association!

I currently work at Petsmart as a support manager and training instructor while I attend college, working toward my journalism and marketing degrees. After college, it is my hope and dream to be able to open my own training business where I can offer group classes and private lessons. I am looking forward to a lifetime of working with dogs and their owners and to continue learning all I can about them!

Shannon Sumner
High School English Teacher and Owner of "Polite Paws, LLC"

I've always had a love for dogs, though I studied English and Education in college and graduate school. After having taught high school English for 8 years, I decided that I really wanted to work with dogs more than teenagers! I enrolled in ABC because of its reputation for being positive-based and thorough. I could not be happier with the program!

Now, staying at home with my 1 year-old son has allowed me to complete my ABC studies and open my own dog training business – Polite Paws, LLC. I love being able to impart my knowledge on dog owners! ABC has taught me how to communicate effectively with both dogs and their owners! Please visit www.politepawsdogtraining.com for more information.

Kare Romanski
Human Factors Engineer, Executive Director of Missing Pet Recovery Services, and Owner of “K9 Kare”

I chose ABC for the comprehensive training program they offered compared to other programs I researched. ABC provided insights into animal behavior I felt would improve my skills in the field when approaching shy or nervous dogs and to help owners properly train their dogs to prevent them from running away again. Please visit http://www.blogtalkradio.com/luckydogshow/2008/06/29/Missing-Pets for a detailed interview of missingpetrecoveryservices.org that mentions ABC several times. ABC provided excellent course materials, mentors and coordinators who truly showed an interest in my success.

Since starting the program, I have been recognized for having the highest recovery rate in the nation for lost dogs and cats. I have been comfortable assisting owners of nervous dogs and newly adopted shelter dogs in helping them train their pets; I also desensitize nervous dogs and help owners establish better relationships with their pets. I also started a free group called The Concord Dog Training Group in NC to help folks with their training and socialization issues, expose owners to various dog events (i.e., Rally, Agility, Search & Rescue, etc.).

Tara Schaper
Licensed Clinical Social Worker and ABC Certified Dog Trainer

I have worked with dogs for many years. For the last 3 years, I have been working with rescue dogs. I had always wanted to have the opportunity to work more closely with animals and had heard great things about ABC. My experience with ABC was great! I learned many new things and was also able to brush up on skills that I already had. With my certification, I will continue to work with shelter/rescue dogs and also provide private, in-home training to our foster parents and others. Most of my experience has been with more difficult dogs, especially feral dogs. I am excited to be able to further my career working with animals!

My primary occupation is working as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with at-risk families. I have been doing this for over 10 years. Working with dogs ties in with my occupation and also serves as a "therapy" for myself. It’s so rewarding to help dogs and watch them succeed and become happy, healthy, well-behaved, and social beings!

Astrid "Mimi" Buendia
Legal Consultant, Animal Behaviorist and Owner of “Fancy Dogs Corporation”

Ever since I was a child, I have had pets, including dogs, cats, birds, horses, which I loved and cared for. People used to come to me for advice on animal care, so I believe I am naturally talented in communicating with and perceiving their needs. Besides “animal languages,” I speak English, Spanish and Italian. My family consists of humans, dogs, cats, horses, ducks and other creatures, including my neighbors’ dogs.

After a successful career as a law student and professional, I reinvented myself with my eternal passion for animals. Then, I started considering a new career as an animal behaviorist. My family and friends thought that this was a hobby of mine, but all of them agreed I was born with the “Dog Whisperer Touch.” All my neighbors and friends were bringing their pets to me to take care of them, or simply looking for advice for their dogs, cats or horses.
I felt there was a need for people to learn how to relate with their dogs and their behavior, but I never imagined there was a professional career which addressed this problem. Then, I discovered the Animal Behavior College Certified Dog Trainer curriculum. When I considered getting an education for this new career, I started researching for the best organization I could find. I found that this prestigious school holds very high standards of excellence and a strict code of ethics, with the most modern teaching techniques. That is why I chose ABC for my education.

I must affirm that my life has changed during and after I took the ABC program. Since the beginning, it has enriched me as a person and as an animal lover. I feel that, with this education, I can accomplish my real mission in saving dogs’ lives. The volunteer time at the shelter showed me how important it is to help dogs who have been abandoned and give them a second chance in life, using the methods that I learned at ABC. My joy is to watch the dogs smiling and greeting me happily when they see me, considering me the leader of their pack. I play with them, I brush them, I massage them, I walk them, and I praise them and get them to recover their pride and self esteem. I also teach them obedience commands and I get them ready to be adopted, no matter their breed or previous traumas, from pit-bulls to toy dogs.
The best part is that now I am volunteering in this no-kill organization and I will continue to do so forever.

With my certification in animal behavior from ABC, I am planning to become a full-time dog behavior expert. I plan on continuing my education by taking further courses and attending seminars related to animal care. ABC made me realized that my mission was not in the legal field, but that I was destined to accomplish great things by helping creatures that could not speak out for themselves.

With this mission in mind, I founded Fancy Dogs Corporation with a group of professionals who share a common bond – our love of animals. Our objective is to protect and serve animals by educating people and training their beloved pets. We are becoming mentors to our clients so they can give love and respect to their dogs. We help them to enjoy safer, happier and better lives with their best friend.

Within our staff, I have my Scottie, Tina M., as an advisor in doggie psychology. She also holds a seat in my board of directors.

Kelli Neufeld
College Student and ABC Certified Dog Trainer

I have always had a great love for animals. When I was 12 years old, I adopted my first dog, Autumn. Immediately I knew my path in life – to work with dogs. A year later I adopted another German shepherd mix, Sierra, which only strengthened my desire to follow my path. Without “my girls” I know that I would be way off track and probably lost in life. Knowing that I wanted to help animals, I started on the route to becoming a veterinarian. Being a veterinarian was the only way I thought I could fulfill my love of making a difference in animal’s lives. After becoming aware of the millions of homeless dogs and of the unfortunate reality of America’s shelter system, I knew that I wanted to make a difference for the dogs that truly need the most help. I wanted to focus on behavior and learn how to prevent dogs from being surrendered and help those already in shelters to get out and into loving homes.

When I found ABC, I knew their program would be extremely beneficial to me. I chose ABC because I know the importance of having certification and professional training. ABC offered a flexible schedule with both online and hands-on work. I got to learn from an invaluable Mentor Trainer. What really made my experience at ABC great was the genuine interest all the staff had in my success.

As a certified dog trainer, I am training part-time while I work towards a degree in psychology with a minor in veterinary science at the University of Arizona. I want to incorporate my certification with my degree to create my own training business after college. My life goal is to operate my own dog rescue/shelter.

I owe my success to ABC and all the staff who offered such great support, as well as to Autumn, Sierra, and Sadie (my beloved shar pei & pit bull mix who has crossed the rainbow bridge), the greatest dogs who have loved me unconditionally every day and have given me the strength to accomplish all that I have.

Dennis Fehling
Former Aerospace Industry Professional and Window-Cleaning Business Owner and Owner of “Friends for Life Dog Training”

I believe this is what I was meant to do with the rest of my life. After eight years in the military and 23 years in the aerospace industry and being the owner and operator of a small but successful window cleaning business, I realized it was time for a change. Working with dogs has been a life-long passion for me, but until about two years ago, I didn't plan on making a career out of it. My wife and I are dog lovers without a doubt. We are the proud companions of seven dogs. At the time of this photo, one of our pack members (our wolf dog, Tuka) was at the vet with some stomach issues.

Some dear friends of ours have commented more than I can count that they really believe I was "raised by wolves," so I figured it was about time I put my love for all things dogs to the test. I cannot tell you how much my life has changed going through the ABC program. From start to finish, it has been a journey of heartache and pure joy. The heartache part stemmed from my volunteer time at the shelter, but I still spend a fair bit of time there. Seeing all of these beautiful animals and working with them and interacting with the shelter staff really made me realize why I have chosen to become a dog trainer with my mission being to keep as many dogs with their owners as I possibly can and to do whatever it takes to keep any dog from being euthanized. The pure joy part comes when I work with a dog that is considered unworkable or un-trainable and seeing the results from the training I have received through ABC in a very positive light. I looked into many other schools and none really offered what I was looking for. The material is very thorough in its approach to animal behavior; I felt that I was really getting an education, not just on the surface but a very deep understanding of how dogs tick.

The externship part was a blast. I was assigned to, in my opinion, some of the best agility trainers around – Stephanie Morris and Jane Devlin. I learned so much from them, I will be forever in their debt.

My plans are to become a full-time dog trainer specializing in behavior problems including aggression, both dog on dog and dog on human. I plan on continuing my education by attending workshops that specifically deal with aggression issues and behavior modification treatment. ABC has given me the tools to really fulfill my dream of becoming a great dog trainer.

My business name is Friends for Life Dog Training. The reason I chose that name is another success story from my training with ABC. One of our rescue dogs who we call Mr. Kingsley, a 75lb pit bull, was going to be put down because he was going kennel crazy at the shelter I volunteered for. We took a chance on him and adopted him. Our German shepherd Meika wanted nothing to do with him and we were almost forced to give him up. With a lot of work and training, he is now a very happy and loving member of our family. Meika and him not only live and train together; they have even been spotted sleeping together. Thanks, ABC, for helping me to help my best friends. Thanks to my Program Manager, Azure, and my Externship Coordinator, Heather, for staying with me and helping me get through a very demanding but rewarding course.

Janet French
Technician at HACH and Owner of “Be the Leader Dog Training”

I have been an animal lover my whole life. Dogs are my passion, though. I am an Animal Behavior College Certified Dog Trainer. I help owners understand that changing training approaches will make for successful training experiences. Each dog, like their owners, is an individual and I evaluate each dog to find the best method that will work for them. I have worked for veterinarians throughout the years and I have been a dog groomer since 1974. Rehabilitating abused dogs has always been my specialty. I also train and rehabilitate horses. I have a Pek-a-Poo, a Greyhound, a Manx, a Quarter Horse Paint crop-out and a Mule. My husband and I love our kids. My specialty is behavior problems.

The ABC program is great. I chose it because they realize that you have to be a well-rounded trainer so that you can help all dogs and their owners. It is important to evaluate each situation and know that what worked for one dog may not work for the next. I will find the method that will work for each dog and owner.

I work at HACH where I make water probe cables. I solder and run an injection molding machine at night. I love my job! It makes it easy for me to pursue my ABC career.

Joanna Cristalli
ABC Certified Dog Trainer

I’ve always had a love for all animals but really found my love of dogs in my first ones, Bear and Jade, who were my inspiration to take the step and make a career of training dogs. When I was growing up, my family always had cats so I didn’t have a dog until I got married. Now a dog will always be a part of my family and my life.

I have been working in the corporate world for over 15 years; suddenly my days became very boring and monotonous and I thought to myself, “life is too short not to enjoy what you do every day!” It was then I realized I wanted to follow my passion and start an entirely new career working with dogs. Once I made this decision, I immediately started researching options to become a trainer. With many different companies, courses and agendas to choose from, I chose ABC because of the flexibility to complete the coursework online and in my own time. This was very convenient since I work full time. My knowledge of dogs at this time was rather minimal so the information provided in the curriculum was precise, detailed and great for me! The stages flowed perfectly for me to understand and the hands-on portion is what really put the finishing touches on it. When I found a local animal shelter to complete my volunteer hours, I knew I would continue volunteering to help the less fortunate dogs become more adoptable. I am hoping to start my dog training career with a local training company to gain more knowledge and experience so I feel more confident in following and fulfilling my dream, which is to one day start my own business and offer private lessons as well as group classes. My goal is to help families with dogs grow and live together in a positive and happy way!

In the last stages of my studies, we unfortunately lost our beloved Jade, so my incentive to do what I love grows stronger every day.

Thank you ABC for enabling me to follow my dream.

Crystal L. Williams, Honors Graduate
Stay-At-Home Mom and ABC Certified Dog Trainer

My path to becoming an ABC Certified Trainer started when I had to put my pit bull, Duke, in a rehabilitation program. I had rescued him from fighting, and consequently, he had aggression issues towards other dogs when food was around. The prospect of being able to rehabilitate an animal from such a behavior absolutely amazed me. So, I did my research, and everywhere I looked, I saw ABC’s logo. I put in an inquiry and got a call from admissions the next day. Just weeks later, I received my books in the mail.

Halfway through my training, I became pregnant with twins. I started my externship phase at five months pregnant, and got put on bed rest right after finishing the aptitude stage. Three months after having my son and my daughter, I jumped right back into training, even though my son was in the hospital. I finished up with my participation stage of the externship and got to work on my volunteer phase. Then I studied, studied, studied. I was so close to graduating with honors, and I did not want to blow it on the final exam.

On July 9, I submitted my final for grading, and on July 13, my Program Manager Azure Long called me with the news that I had done it! I was finally graduating, and with honors.

Currently, I conduct private training sessions part-time at the Jersey Shore, besides being a stay-at-home mom to my twins, and five dogs (three beagles, a yellow lab, and an English mastiff). I am also interested in educating people about pit bulls. I want to people to understand the truth about pit bulls and about dog fighting. I would love nothing more than to help clear up their name, and do away with BSL once and for all. Moreover, I hope to start a rescue of my own one day.

Jennifer Guastella
Teacher and Owner of "Dog World"

One of my earliest memories is of pretending to read books to my German Shepherd, Max, in his doghouse outside. I used to get up early in the morning and walk him. No one could quite figure out why this 120 lb monster of a dog would walk obediently by my side when my little arms could never have held him should he have chosen to run. The strength of such a bond is a mystery to me, but the love of a dog still fills me with wonder and awe.

My affinity with all animals began in our household, which always included at least two dogs and usually an injured bird, orphaned bunny, or some other little friend in need. At the age of eight, I began riding horses and this soon developed into a full-time hobby. I rode Morgan horses and began showing on both a local and national level until about the age of 21. This experience, more than any other in my life, taught me that dedication, consistency, and hard work equaled success. Those lessons transferred into all areas of my life as I pursued an education at the State University of New York at Fredonia. I earned my teaching degree in Secondary English Education and learned how rewarding it is to pass knowledge on to others.

About three years ago, my son Alex began learning agility from his grandmother. He was fortunate to be able to work with her dog, Mach Minka, and was so enthusiastic he pulled me in! Soon, I was attending classes with our new Boxer, Shiloh, and the light began to turn on. I loved the process and began to feel the same excitement that I felt all those years before when I had worked with and shown the horses. I also began to see the opportunities available and realized that it was time for a change. With three children at home who are all approaching their teens, I felt it necessary to be available for them and not work full-time. Maybe it was time to be my own boss, and pursue a career that had meaning for me.

I began researching dog training programs in my area and quickly discovered the web site for ABC. The curriculum was so comprehensive; I felt right away that this was something that was actually attainable. The staff won me over immediately and I was on my way. I guess timing is everything! My experience with ABC has allowed me to take something that was just a hobby and a dream and cultivate it into a career. I have come to recognize that there is a need to strengthen the bond and bridge the communication gap between dogs and their owners. This ensures a more cohesive household and reduces the number of owners forced to give up their pets because of behavior issues.

My dream for the future is to create a canine super-center where owners can come for training, grooming, daycare, or simply to play and enjoy their dogs. Because Western New York isn't an area that promotes dog parks, I believe that this type of recreation center is greatly needed and will be a huge success. To that end, I have begun private, in-home training to gain experience and build a strong client base. I also hope to add group classes to my curriculum for the added benefits of socializing dogs together. It is exciting to be pursuing something that I believe in so completely.

ABC has been instrumental in providing the skills and knowledge that will allow me to build a strong foundation for my business. The externship offered an amazing opportunity to apply the skills and ideas that I had learned in a practical setting. The business building concepts that I learned have also been invaluable to building my business. I hope that in the future I will be able to act as a Mentor Trainer myself and continue to promote a program that has changed my life and given me the opportunity to realize a lifelong dream.

Karen L. Combs
Owner of "Karen Cares for Canines LLC"

My success story so far is going back to school at fifty and looking forward to a future other than the restaurant business that consumed me for almost thirty years. Graduating ABC and starting my own business has been a challenge that I have really enjoyed.

When I started the program, I had three dogs. Thanks to the volunteer kennel work requirement of ABC, I fell in love with a little American Staffordshire terrier (pit bull mix) that had been at the Humane Society for at least a year and a half no one seemed to want her. She was hit by a car and lost her back leg. She was scared by her accident and from living on a cement floor for so long she also displayed a lot of kennel aggression toward other dogs and certain people. I could not give up on what I thought was a sweetheart with no training, manners or social experience. So, as the story goes, she stole my heart. I continued to visit her after completing the volunteer requirement of ABC. I asked if I could take her home to give her a break from the confinement of a cage. Everyone warned me of the possible dangers this dog could present for me and the dogs I already have. They said that chances were I would bring her back just like everyone else had in no time at all. Well, the little visit here at home has turned into two weeks now. I think she has found her new home.

I look forward to building a successful future in the world of dog training. Along the way I have met a lot of good friendly people that I may have never come across otherwise. I was invited to the Deerfield Chamber of Commerce monthly meeting as a guest in order to promote my business and meet members who could help influence this new adventure in my life. That in itself was a special event for me. I think I am off to a good start in my new business, Karen Cares for Canines LLC. Thank you, ABC.

Julie Newman
Home Maker, Home Health Aide and Dog Trainer

I am a mature person who found it necessary to start a career after being a home maker for many years. For my entire life, I have been a devoted pet owner of dogs and one incredible cat. My love for animals made this a natural choice. I made inquiries about dog training and was taken in by what Animal Behavior College (ABC) had to offer.

My Program Manager and Externship Coordinator were invaluable aids in explaining all the requirements and answering all my questions. The tests for each stage of dog training were thorough reviews of all of the reading material.

My plan is to advertise myself as a Certified Dog Trainer. I would like to do that full-time, but that depends on the demand. I took a training program as a Home Health Aide which I just completed. If I can work at dog training and being a home health aide, doing each one part-time, I would be very happy.

Betsy Thompson
Director of Human Resources and Training

I’ve had a love for dogs ever since I can remember. When I was five years old, my best friend and I would pretend to be dogs – it was our favorite game and our parents were great about putting water bowls out for us to drink from and taking us for walks with makeshift leashes! My father was in the military and we moved every couple of years, so it wasn’t until he got ready to retire that we got our first dog – a Weimeraner named Gray King. I’ve been involved with dog training on a personal level for sixteen years. I currently have three adopted dogs – Merlin, Emma and Huckleberry. Merlin is my therapy dog, Huck is my agility and flyball dog and Emma is my couch potato.

Five years ago, I started volunteering at the Humane Society Fairfax County and found what had been missing from my life. I love the interactions I have with the dogs there. It was also through the HSFC that I found a wonderful dog trainer who showed me that anything was possible with any dog. It’s wonderful to work with the HSFC dogs to increase their adoptability simply by changing their behavior and then knowing you’ve contributed to their finding a new home. I’ve also found that working with potential and current pet owners is very rewarding. I decided that working with dogs would be my second career once I am able to retire which I hope will be in a few years.

After searching for certification programs, I decided that ABC was the right fit for me. It was a great choice. The externship part of the program was excellent and offered me an opportunity to try out what I had learned. My mentor has invited to me to continue on with her so I can continue to gain experience teaching. I look forward to many years of continuing my volunteer experience and hopefully starting a new career training dogs.

Debby Million
Former Nurse and Owner, "In Line K-9"

I've loved dogs all my life and now have four of my own, including a 150 lb Great Dane, a 3 lb Yorkie, and 2 Chihuahua/Pekinese mixes. They bring me so much joy. I can't imagine my life without dogs. I was so glad to find a school that would teach me the skills I needed to train dogs. Plus, it's so much fun. I chose ABC because it was very affordable for me and I could learn at my own pace, while still holding down a full time job. I work at a state facility for the mentally disabled (as a nurse for 10 years and now as a document examiner), and I couldn't quit and go to school. There weren’t any schools nearby, so when I found out about ABC, I knew it was the way to go. I've learned so much in the past year and it's been well worth the effort I've had to put into it. I'm 51 now, and I've proven to myself and others that you're never too old to learn to do what you love. The hands-on training with my mentor was invaluable and I'm so blessed to have had her to work with. From here, I plan to offer free basic obedience sessions to anyone who adopts a dog from my local shelter. I am also starting my own business for private training. Thank you ABC for giving me the chance to make a difference for dogs and their owners and for providing me with an excellent program that I know will change my life.

Mark A. Wolfe
ABC Certified Dog Trainer with Honors

My name is Mark A. Wolfe. I retired some years ago from sales and owning my landscaping company. I returned to my first love, dogs. I chose Animal Behavior College because of the convenience of internet classes and also the hands-on training through the externship and volunteering. I have learned so much through ABC that I feel very confident with the skills that I now have. It was great having a program manager to work with though out the curriculum. I am now working in a new career that I have always wanted. I plan on building on my own business in the near future. I own two German Shepherds, Tito and Zeuss. They are my best buddies.

Mary Krolikowski
Registered Nurse/Case Manager and Dog Trainer

My name is Mary Krolikowski. I am a Registered Nurse/Case Manager as my full time career. I have loved animals my whole life. My family has almost always had dogs. I currently have 2 dogs, a rabbit and 3 guinea pigs. My true passion is dogs, though. I have been a volunteer at an animal shelter for over 11 years and I absolutely love it. I’ve been told that I have a natural ability or talent with dogs, which is one of the reasons why I spent more time with some of the more difficult dogs that came through the shelter. I would play with them, love them, work on some basic obedience cues and I would notice that sometimes these dogs became less difficult. This is the reason I decided to go to school to become a certified dog trainer. My hope is that I can help prevent any dog that gets adopted from our shelter from being returned for behavior/obedience issues and help make others more adoptable.

I chose Animal Behavior College after doing a large amount of research on the internet. I called a few of the former students - now trainers - on the ABC website that had graduated from ABC to inquire about their experiences with the curriculum. Everyone I spoke to gave me wonderful, positive feedback about the program. The staff at Animal Behavior College was very informative when I spoke with them to gather information as well. They were very upbeat and friendly. I could tell that they really enjoyed what they were doing and that was important to me. It was also important to me that the program was online and flexible as I do work full-time. The Mentor Trainer I did my externship was very knowledgeable and a wonderful teacher. I believe my externship was my favorite part of the curriculum.

Thanks ABC for all of the knowledge and training you provided me with to fulfill a dream of mine. I look forward to helping others train their dogs and to helping the dogs at the shelter I volunteer at get good homes. I couldn’t have done it without ABC!

Sandy Shore
Home Health Nurse and Owner of “Bad Dog to Good Dog LLC”

I chose ABC because I liked the fact that the founder, Steve Appelbaum, was initially a dog trainer himself. I liked that he built his business up from the ground and that he helped evolve his concept into a complete program. I liked that ABC focuses on education for dog training and is not a "general technical school" where dog training is just another program to make money off of as many tech schools are noted for. The curriculum seemed very complete and many of the people I originally spoke with and was involved with throughout the program were ABC grads themselves. I found the ABC program very difficult and complete, and I have a MS in nursing! I found it more challenging than my Masters program!

I would like to explore different options but would like to base my business on my experience as a Home Health Nurse and provide training assistance in my community.

I became a dog trainer because of my dog "Whizzer" who sadly died due to the pet food poisoning in 2007. She was my "inspiration" for going into dog training due to the fact she was the worst-behaved dog I ever had. I was determined not to return her to the shelter (I never do anyway) and after going through four separate dog trainers, spending over $2000 without any success with dealing with her poor leash walking, aggression to other dogs, and destructiveness, I finally find one trainer who was helpful and who provided training to me, some of which was similar to the philosophies of ABC. I was amazed how many training experts were not, how many used punishment and force and how many really did not pay attention to what my needs were in regards to Whizzer's behavioral issues. Subsequently I decided to pursue dog training since my love for dogs and all things canine makes me want to help others keep their dogs "forever" as so many turn dogs into shelters and are subsequently euthanized.

Dawn E. Archer Pizzoferrato
ABC Certified Dog Trainer

My name is Dawn E. Archer Pizzoferrato and I chose ABC because I live in a small town and it was convenient for me to get my training education over the internet. But it also provided a means for hands-on training through the volunteer program and externship with a local dog training school. The local training also provided me a network of dog training people in which to get info or work. I learned so much from ABC. Even though I worked with and trained dogs as a young person (my 4-H club trained and socialized puppies for Leader Dogs for the Blind in Rochester, MI) a lot has changed in dog training since in the last 30 years. I had to re-learn some techniques and learn some all new philosophies of dog training. The book/internet info has been a valuable resource me throughout the externship and beyond as I pursue creating my own business.

I'm currently marketing my own Dog Training/Pet Sitting business called Pizzoferrato Pet-care and Training Services – P.P.A.T.S. I've already gotten some clients and am looking forward to providing valuable services to the busy professionals in my area. My husband is also a professional photographer and together we are offering pet owners/clients beautiful professional pet/family portrait photography.

Gerard Alblas
ABC Certified Dog Trainer

After being in the construction land surveying business and spending the last 4 years in marketing for the same company, I felt it was time to do something else. Being the proud owner of 2 female Labrador dogs and having time on my hands, I decided to become a professional dog trainer. The ABC Dog Obedience Instructor Training Program, in my opinion, is the best. When I visited a new Petco store in the neighborhood, I was instantly hired as a staff dog trainer. I only showed them my new "ABC Certified Dog Trainer" ID card. Now I am approaching a new career I always dreamed of. Thanks to all you guys at ABC.

Caitlin Morrow

I currently live in Western North Carolina, but I am not originally from here. My husband and I moved here about 2 years ago from Tennessee. I am a recent graduate from the University of Tennessee with a degree in Animal Science. I went to UT for their pre-vet program but found that I was more interested in animal behavior and that was when I found ABC. I choose ABC because it allowed me to work online on my own schedule. I loved the program because it gave me the opportunity to work with a Mentor Trainer hands on. I learn best by watching and then doing, and I found that working with my mentor during my externship was a great experience that taught me skills I wouldn't have learned in a book.

I had a great experience with ABC and their staff was very helpful throughout the program. I am currently using my certification to work with a rescue organization and help make their dogs more adoptable. I would like to open my own training/boarding facility but for now I am enjoying helping shelter dogs find homes.

Vanessa Gunter-Brown
Professional Pet-Sitter and Trainer with "Thoughts 4 Paws"

I began attending Animal Behavioral College starting in 2004. I went through several personal setbacks throughout my studies, but my teachers were always there to support me. Without their patience, understanding, and encouragement, I am not sure if I could have made it. Thank you for being so professional and so kind to me. I will forever be grateful to Animal Behavior College and their wonderful program... I have learned so much and feel very confident in the skills I now know in dog training. Thankfully, I am able to use my skills everyday at work as a professional pet sitter/trainer at Thoughts 4 Paws. (If you ever need my help, I will be happy to hear from you). Thanks again, ABC....You're the best!

Ed Russell
Retiree and Owner of "Luv’N’Care Dog Training & Pet Sitting"

I have worked with dogs my entire life, but with service, college, and the corporate world, could not give it the attention I wanted. Upon retirement I decided to go back and pursue the thing I really enjoyed. Knowing I was out of touch with the latest methods I looked for a good school. Through the internet I found ABC. Their comprehensive website gave me a reason to call and find out more about their program. I was handled well by people who seemed to be very knowledgeable, and had a true loving concern for the welfare of dogs.

My experience throughout the ABC Program was both challenging and rewarding. The entire staff that handled each step of my program was very professional and attentive to my needs.

I plan on building my training business by providing individual and group classes for dogs of all ages. Currently I am establishing good relationships with pet suppliers, groomers, and shelters. These outlets have already provided me with many referrals.

I also want to specialize in certain areas such as dealing with aggression, and work with dogs in certain service areas. I will continue to look to ABC for more informational materials they may offer so I can continue to extend my knowledge.

I’m now retired and working solely on my dog business, Luv’N’Care Dog Training & Pet Sitting.

Katie Hicks
Owner, "Katie's Dog Training"

I have been a dog lover ever since I can remember. I got to pick out my first puppy when I was just five years old. He was just a good old mutt that came from Honor, MI. Obviously, I didn't start training him, but my father did. My dad has always been a dog lover as well, that's where I get it from. Anyways, my dad let me name him too, so as my first dog at the age of 5, I named him Barney. Ever since I had Barney, I've had a best friend. Unfortunately, after 14 years, Barney passed away from old age. I never thought I'd own another dog again... yah right! We still had our other family dog, Shortie, a St. Bernard/Husky mix that my dad rescued from Oceana K-9.

So, in November of 2006, I decided that I would become a volunteer for Pound Buddies Rescue in Muskegon, MI. I started out cleaning cages and doing Adopt A Days at Petco. Then, I started fostering dogs. I fostered mostly Pit Bulls, because for one, they are the breed that gets put down the most and for two, I have found they are the easiest to train. So, in my time of fostering, I ran a across a 150 lb 5-year-old Rottweiler. He was an owner surrender because supposedly he killed barn cats and rabbits. Well, I had two cats at the time and I didn't have a barn, so I decided to take this big lug home and give him a try. I fell in love with him the first night. Although he was not very mannerly, he was so sweet. He never once bothered my cats. So, I ended up adopting him and now he is trained so well, I take him everywhere I can off-leash and he never leaves my side. Best dog I've ever had. I do have one cat that I have trained to sit, but have not been successful at taking the training any further than that. I just recently had to put my other rescue cat down because he had an incurable bladder disease. Anyways, during this time with training Carl, I discovered that dog training was made to be my career.

So, I got online one night after cleaning the shelter and I searched for dog training schools. I got a wide variety; however, ABC was the only school that offered a hands-on externship, business management and safety, plus they did everything all online for out-of-state convenience and set you up with a successful trainer for your externship. So, I knew this was the school for me. I called that night and talked to an ABC Admissions Counselor, Cindy Clement. She was so fun to talk to and very attentive to my specific needs. Right away she started brainstorming on ways I could make this affordable and what other things the program offered. It wasn't long after that, I was all set to go. After being accepted, I was introduced to my Program Manager, Angel DeLuca. Best person I ever dealt with. I had so many questions throughout the whole program, some of which I thought were on the far side, yet every time Angela was right there to respond to all of my emails within one day. When I started my Externship with my Externship Coordinator, Fawna Kiefer, I was so excited. Every time Fawna called to let me know updates or ask how everything was going, she was always just as enthusiastic as I was. I loved that. She set me up with one of the best dog trainers I have met yet. Her name is Jodi Cole and she is from Sheridan, MI. Not only was she an awesome instructor, but she also trains dogs for Search and Rescue, Prisons and Police Dogs. Needless to say, I received a lot more training than just basic obedience and problem solving. Actually, in the spring of 2008, she will be coming to Muskegon to train myself and 3 other dog trainers for Search and Rescue. After the completion of that, I still plan on continuing with Prison Dogs and Police Dogs as well as Dog Grooming and Therapy Dogs. After that, who knows? Maybe I will study some Massage Therapy for Dogs. Either way, my training will never end.

Carolyn Taylor
Owner, “The Polite Pup, LLC”

I have worked around animals most of my life and can thank my current dog/student for helping to further instill my passion of working with dogs. She is such a willing and fun partner and we have both learned together. To gain more knowledge and to secure more credibility in the area of dog training, I decided to enroll in the ABC Program. The information I learned is invaluable. I am in the process of starting up my own dog training business called The Polite Pup, LLC. I will mainly conduct group classes at a new boarding kennel in my area called Almost Home.

Meredith Weir
Veterinary Assistant and Owner, "Mere-Care Pet Sitting Plus"

Since the time I was very young I’ve had a profound appreciation for all God’s Creatures. I have had my share of pets - dogs, cats, turtles, salamanders, fish, and a hoard of Hoppy Toads from Cape Cod, Massachusetts (which happened to travel home with me in the car to Lake Shawnee, New Jersey where I lived at the time). Life took me in its own path until 1996. My life took an abrupt change then, and gave me a chance to pursue my passion and love for animals. I studied and achieved a degree in Animal Science which allowed me to become a Veterinary Assistant. It wasn’t too long before I discovered that there is such a need for owners to know about First Aid for their pets. In 1999 I went to San Diego and I studied to become a Certified Pet Tech Instructor. This is a wonderful program I would encourage all pet owners to learn. I hope to utilize those skills with my current accomplishment which is becoming a Certified ABC Dog Trainer. The shelters are full of dogs that, with love and patience, could make wonderful companions. I know because I own a rescued Papillion who would have been euthanized. I am blessed to have him in my life. I currently own and operate my pet-sitting business Mere-Care Pet Sitting Plus and am looking forward to adding my new skills as a dog trainer to my business.

ABC has the best curriculum. I really researched the various dog training colleges and none met the standards that ABC has. I was very impressed with the encouragement I received from my program manager. There is such a great need for dog trainers. If you are considering becoming a dog trainer, I highly recommend Animal Behavior College.

Diana Roslie
Veterinary Assistant/Kennel Supervisor and Owner of "Pet Shepherds"

Unlike most people, I didn't have the chance to grow up surrounded by dogs. This is not because I didn't love dogs, but because my parents would not allow me to have any pets. Luckily for them I was a good kid and never brought any strays back home. I lived the first part of my life in Romania and streets there were full of stray dogs but unfortunately I could only play with them while outside. A number of years went by and when I was a junior in high school in Montreal, Canada, I somehow convinced my dad to let me adopt a Siberian Husky. That dog was pretty much my first attempt at training and he amazed me with how fast he learned basic commands. My knowledge about this topic was nil back then but I instinctively managed to teach him to sit, lie down, shake and play dead all in one day. I never managed to get him to stop pulling but to this day he has a very special place in my heart and I'll never forget him.

As time went by, I secretly desired a career with dogs but I knew I did not want to be a veterinarian, yet I wasn't aware of other pet-related opportunities out there. I was going to school for a degree in business and I thought I had missed my chance to work with animals. One day in 2003 I was thinking about my future and I had a revelation about how wonderful it would be to train dogs for a living. I wanted to work with dogs and their owners to help solve behavior problems, and to improve the relationship between owners and dogs. I knew this would be a difficult road because of my lack of hands-on experience.

ABC immediately stood out not only because it was more affordable than most programs out there, but also because of their hands-on externship requirement. I really liked the idea of being able to study at my own pace from the comfort of my own home. At the time I discovered ABC I did not have the resources to pursue this dream, however three years later I was finally able to enroll. The externship was my favorite part of the program. I enjoyed working with my Mentor Trainer and volunteering at my local shelter. My little Chihuahua/Dachshund mix boy was my guinea pig for my externship and he made me very proud when he passed his Canine Good Citizen test at the end of our training lessons. While I was still an ABC student, I fostered a Siberian Husky who eventually became a permanent addition to the family. He is great to practice my training skills with because he is so easily distracted and stubborn.

I'm currently working as a veterinary assistant but I plan to become involved full-time with my pet sitting / dog training business in Fernandina Beach, Florida. My goals are to continue to learn and improve my skills and knowledge, in order to better educate pet owners and help reduce the number of dogs abandoned in shelters every day.

Jasmine Bass, Honors Graduate
Veterinary Nurse and Dog Trainer

Hello! My name is Jasmine Bass. Ever since I was young I have been fascinated and in love with animals. By the age of 7, my life revolved around them. Dogs, cats, birds, lizards, turtles, fish, frogs, crabs, you name it, I probably had it! I grew up in NC as the “animal girl” of my neighborhood, always the first to find strays and rescues. Unfortunately, when I was about 11 years old, my family moved to Illinois and I had to give up my precious pets. But my love for animals never died. At age 15, I started my first (and current) job working at an animal hospital. With the help of my boss, Dr. Sam Morris and several others I worked my way up from animal caretaker to veterinary assistant to veterinary nurse. As much as I love being a veterinary nurse, it can sometimes be a sad job. I wanted to be able to help owners and their four-legged family members in a different way.

That’s when I decided to find information on becoming a dog trainer. I spent one afternoon browsing the internet for different online schools to become a certified dog trainer. I came across ABC and filled out their form to receive information about the school expecting to get a small package in the mail with all the info. A day later I received a call from Cindy, an ABC Admissions Counselor, and was very impressed. She was so helpful and informative. I did some more research and called her back. ABC was just right for me. The curriculum was what I wanted to learn, the price was right and the program was flexible.

Before I knew it, I was on my way to becoming an ABC Certified Dog Trainer. I was so excited! I really enjoyed my experience with ABC. The curriculum’s relevance was perfect for what I wanted to teach. Having a Program Manager to help you along the way was great. But I think the externship portion was the best. As a hands-on learner, being able to practice what I learned under the supervision of a well-trained professional was amazing! Also, I got married in the middle of the program and ABC was SO patient and flexible with my crazy schedule at that time. ABC really is amazing!

Now, as an Honors graduate of ABC, I am putting together several obedience classes that will take place at the animal hospital I am currently at. Everyone is very excited. I plan on continuing my animal behavior education in animal aggression and more advanced behavior modification. I also see having my own training facility in future.

Thanks ABC for everything you have put into me to be the trainer I am today.

Akiko Makino

I have grown up with dogs for my whole life. I moved to New York from Japan in 2006, and I was surprised to see that many people walk with their dogs in luxury shops along Fifth Avenue. Unlike Japan, I rarely see the scene that dogs are barking each other while walking on the street or parks. I thought, "Dogs are regarded as members of the society in this city".

This made me decide to be a dog trainer. I have a dream that someday Japanese society will become dog-friendly like New York… for humans and dogs to live together, not only do dogs need training but humans do, too.

I learned many theories and concepts as well as training techniques from ABC. Volunteering at the ASPCA and doing hands-on training with my Mentor Trainer Kerry were very precious experiences for me. This gave me a wide range of knowledge and experiences with different dog breeds.

I've just moved to Irvine, CA and am excited to start my own class besides volunteering at the local animal shelter. I hope I can help many dogs and dog owners from now on!

Kelly Legarreta
Full-time dog trainer and owner of "Healing Paws-Abilities, LLC"

I have four amazing dogs, one of them with crippling arthritis - a 15-year-old Pomeranian named Papa. I decided to get certified in Canine Massage for him, and when I opened my canine massage business, I was overwhelmed with my clients' constant need for training advice and help. I was lucky enough to get hired and accredited by PetSmart as a trainer, and I realized that helping dogs and their families was ALL I wanted to do. I also realized that I wanted to help the dogs who couldn't make it to PetSmart for whatever reason...aggression, anxiety, uncontrollability, non-obedience related issues, etc.

I started searching for training schools that would help me help dogs on a broader level, and I chose ABC. Through the externship program, I was so lucky to meet my Mentor Trainer Jeannie Bates in Naples, Florida. Together with a group of 7 trainers in southwestern Florida (5 of us ABC trainers or students of ABC) we formed the SW Florida Professional Dog Trainers Alliance (www.swflprofessionaldogtrainers.com ), dedicated to promoting positive dog training- "No Force-Just Fun!" We take seminars together, support each other, teach together, refer to each other due to our individual strengths, and strive to make better lives for our four legged clients. The alliance has been able to be a part of every major shelter in SW Florida, offering training programs and outreach support. It is truly amazing.

I chose ABC after researching many programs. I found it to be the most informative, well-laid out program, with plenty of support and an excellent externship opportunity. I wanted a recognizable school with great credentials, and I am very proud to have graduated with honors from such a great program. I had great support from my Program Manager Azure Long, and I am grateful for the information I learned. The material was and continues to be extremely helpful – I reference it often. I am lucky enough to have had an amazing Mentor and continue to work with amazing trainers that I met through the ABC externship program.

I resigned from PetSmart as I was nearing the end of my ABC Training, and I added training services to my massage business – Healing Paws-Abilities, LLC. Almost overnight I was training dogs full time – an absolute dream come true! I became the resident trainer for a wonderful veterinary clinic (The North Cape Animal Clinic in Cape Coral, Florida) and because of their support I will shortly be opening my own training studio (March 2008)! I am a proud member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT), the International Association of Canine Professionals (IACP), the International Association of Animal Massage and Bodywork (IAAMB), and I am an AKC Canine Good Citizen Evaluator and Coach. I will always be furthering my education to better help my clients, and I am currently starting a 4-year diploma of Advanced Canine Behavior program with the Companion Animal Sciences Institute (CASI).

I am currently training full time, teaching in-home private lessons, and I am the resident trainer for the North Cape Animal Clinic in Cape Coral Florida where I teach group classes, and I am about to open my own training center! I plan to further my education always, in order to be the best I can possibly be for my clients, and I am about to start another diploma course to be a canine behavior specialist.

I am committed to a lifelong career working with and helping dogs, and my ultimate goal is to enrich their relationships with understanding, positive reinforcement techniques, and harmony of life and health. I am truly the luckiest girl in the world.

Kristen Patterson
Radiology Student and Part-Time Dog Trainer

I am a resident of South Jersey. I love dogs. I have a 13-month-old Staffordshire bull terrier. I believe that the only way to train is with positive reinforcement. I think training is such an important key to owning a well-behaved dog. I feel that there would be less dogs being put to sleep in the animal shelters if people took the time to realize how important simple basic training can be. I am currently a radiology student at Shore Memorial Hospital in Somers Point, NJ. I really enjoy training and at the moment I am assisting my Mentor Trainer, Renee Premaza, in Marlton, NJ.

I chose ABC because I loved the fact that I could do the program from home and it was everything I was looking for in becoming a dog trainer. The material was to-the-point and easy to understand and apply in real life. Everyone was so helpful and willing to work with me when I was confused or had questions. I really feel that ABC was the best choice for me and my life. It exceeded all my expectations as an online program and I couldn't have asked to be paired with a more perfect Mentor Trainer.

I plan to continue working as an assistant with my Mentor Trainer, and in the future I would like to go on and begin private lessons and group classes. I would also like to open my own doggie daycare offering training courses for puppies and adult dogs.

At the moment, my primary occupation is a student and I am training part time. But I plan to make it a full time job.

In my wildest dreams I have always imagined that one day, I would become an animal trainer, with dogs, and to have a career as a professional dog trainer and instructor. ABC has indeed offered me those insights and training ideas that would help me to work more effectively at reaching my dream of one day becoming a full-time professional animal trainer.

The reason that I choose ABC was my curiosity and courage to seek out my vision of becoming an professional dog trainer, as well as the fact that the company constantly seeks out the newest and best ideas of animal training; all of the latest techniques, such as positive reinforcement, operant condition, etc. Above all, ABC is willing to share the success of dog training and teach their students how to build the most satisfying relationship possible between people and their dogs.

ABC lived up to my expectations 100%! They helped me to open up my mind, my inner self to the newest training ideas, and acknowledge and consider other professional views of dog training. They assisted and encouraged me to become an outstanding instructor who is continuously seeking new ideas to taste!

ABC helped me to fully understand not only dog training and becoming an instructor, but to better understand the principles of behavior and how an understanding of a dog’s behavior can be used to teach dogs newer and better skills. With the in-home study portion combined with my hands-on training with my Mentor Trainer, Gail Tenny, I was able to learn to speak a whole new language, DSL (Dog as a Second Language).

After becoming an ABC Certified Dog Trainer, I plan on pursuing my fascination in the science of operant conditioning and to become more involved in dog training and in behavioral diagnostics and functional analysis. My goal is to help all dog owners to solve their canine behavioral problems and to improve the bond between owners and their dogs; thus creating a happier home.

Lisa Colon
Owner of "KissAble Canine, LLC"

After working in animal rescue for years, I wanted to get additional experience on companion pet training and behavior modification. Rescue dogs with unknown histories can really benefit from obedience, from consistent house rules and from putting a few exercises in place to modify bad behavior. With a bachelor's degree in the IT field, it was the dogs that had my calling. I quit my corporate job to focus on training full time last year and haven't looked back.

I chose ABC because it offered a comprehensive foundation of companion pet training. ABC also offered education on the finer tips of running your own training business. ABC's program description; online sampled and past trainer testimonials sealed the choice for me that this was the right program. The registration was straightforward and the staff very very helpful. I had a great experience and always maintained good contact with ABC staff. I have now started my own training business, and training is my primary career. I’m loving it!

Melissa Payne
ABC Certified Dog Trainer

My name is Melissa Payne. I have always been an animal person and I have always known that I would be working with some kind of animal. I worked on and received an associate’s degree in Animal Management and started working at a zoo. I soon found out that there was something missing. A friend came to me with a problem that she had with her dog and I found it! I was so happy when I was working out the behavioral issue with her dog that I started looking into dog training. ABC's program is set up so that you can take your time, work at your pace, and get hands-on experience before you leave school. That was what I was looking for. ABC has given me the skills and knowledge that I need to be a great dog trainer. I am so grateful to have worked at the animal shelter and gained a better knowledge of how things work there and the kind of work it takes to run a shelter and the love that the dogs need.

I plan on working with the Mentor Trainer that I worked with while I was a student for a while and then we have been talking about joining together and opening a doggie daycare. With the training experience that we both have, plus the experience and knowledge that I have received through this program, at the zoo, and at the shelter back home, I know we can accomplish a lot. But better than anything, I have gained a great friend.

Luz "Lisa" Martinez
Service Dog Trainer

Where would I begin? I became interested in training dogs while serving a prison sentence of 20 years. There was a program offered that allowed us to train puppies to become Service Dogs. We worked under the supervision of NEADS, (National Education of Assistance Dogs Services). I raised 3 black labs; 2 of them became Service Dogs to children and the last one I raised was unable to graduate due to a brain lesion. My first dog was the first bi-lingual dog in the program. I taught him Spanish and English commands.

My interest grew due to the stories I heard from clients who gained independence and freedom through our program. It was called the Prison Pup Partnership Program. So, for 4 years I was giving life to another person and receiving love from these puppies at the same time.

I chose ABC upon my release because I really wanted to train dogs but do it right. I wanted to get as much knowledge as possible to help others also understand their dogs. It was surprising the attitude I encountered from each staff member at ABC… right from the first phone call! The pleasant voices, the encouraging e-mails... It was overwhelming after all the cruelty I had experienced in my life. So you can say that my journey with ABC was an extremely positive one and I have recommended it to several people.

I am beginning my own business, training dogs privately. My goal is to not only teach basic obedience, but to also help any client with disabilities to teach their dogs how to assist them with simple everyday tasks. I am at present teaching classes and have really enjoyed the end result -- seeing a dog perform in a well-behaved manner. Watching shy, fearful dogs overcome obstacles with each socialization class. Thank you ABC for the support and encouragement all along the way.

Dana Teague
Owner of "Good Karma K-9 Training"

As a teen I bred and trained Brittany Spaniels for hunting. Although I have had dogs all my life, I hadn't considered training as a career. In 2002 I completed a degree in Biology at the age of 49 with the intent of teaching. I quickly figured out that the classroom was not for me. At that time I was training my collie Karma in agility and obedience. It was then that I realized that was what I loved doing. I knew that I need to learn a lot more so I began looking for a school. I chose ABC because of the thorough curriculum and outstanding support they provide. I particularly like their commitment to shelter dogs. As part of my externship I volunteered at www.pawsforlife.org where they rescue dogs that are scheduled for euthanasia at other shelters. I am so committed to their cause that I continue to share my time to train these dogs so they never see another shelter.

Joan Li
Dog Trainer in Beijing, China

We may love dogs for different reasons, but one thing we share undoubtedly that we recover our genuineness through interaction with dogs. Dog lovers find the pure joy connecting to nature. Consider this, besides indulging yourselves with dogs, the closest contact with wild live animals you have is to dive into ocean, but how often can you hug a fish?

I held a professional career in international media marketing in Asia Pacific region, the essence of my daily practice was communication and management. When I reached the life stage that I can choose to do something I really enjoy, I ventured into dog training without hesitation. After a thorough search, I found that the ABC program offers the most comprehensive information about motivational and non-confrontational dog training. Especially, the externship program in the US renders valuable hands-on experience and updated know-how. Currently I reside in Beijing China where dog training is yet a novel concept. I provide private lessons of Basic Obedience Training in English and Chinese. But as the dog population escalates with the urban social-economic growth, I am ready to expand my dog friendly operation in Beijing.

Beth Ethier
Corporate Trainer and Dog Trainer

My name is Beth Ethier. I have always been an animal lover and growing up, I always had dogs and cats in my life. About a year and half ago, I brought a 4-month-old black male Lab into my home and introduced him to my 5-year-old chocolate female Lab, Jesse. Dylan and Jesse had an adjustment period but otherwise got along great. Jesse had been a dream puppy. She was easily trained with a sweet personality that made her everyone’s favorite dog.

However, my newly acquired buddy, Dylan, had some serious possession aggression issues. I had the vet check him out, brought him to a behaviorist and hired a trainer. I was mortified when the trainer did an alpha roll with my puppy. I even had a well known professional trainer, who has his own TV show, tell me to bring the dog back to the breeder. He said he was a dangerous dog. It was then I decided there had to be a better way.

I researched quite a bit of other training techniques through books, TV and the web in hopes of finding the answer for Dylan’s issues. I came across Animal Behavior College. The positive motivational methods of ABC were exactly what I was searching for. I enrolled in ABC and began my journey. Everything I learned throughout the course was practiced with Dylan. As it turned out, Dylan is a highly trainable dog who just needed someone to take control. The externship portion of the course was the best and Dylan went through it with me every step of the way. Today Dylan is a very well mannered, well trained dog and a joy to have around.

I am currently a Corporate Trainer in the business world and am working with my Mentor teaching Puppy and Good Manners classes part time. I hope to soon start my own business and leave the corporate world behind.

I credit Animal Behavior College for giving both Dylan and I a new outlook on life.
Thanks ABC!

Dale Ward
Owner of "Dale's Dog Training Academy"

Hello, my name is Dale Ward and I am a Certified Professional Dog Trainer. I am a graduate of Animal Behavior College (ABC) based in Northridge, CA. I also hold BA Honors and Masters Degrees. After spending many years in the corporate world, owning my own IT consulting business in Canada, I decided to do what I really love – work with dogs. I have spent time working as a kennel caretaker, doggie playroom supervisor, and grooming assistant. I have also worked in a veterinary office and am a certified Veterinary Technical Nutrition Counselor. I have literally worked with thousands of dogs. I chose ABC because it offered me the flexibility I needed, to continue working while studying. The Mentor Trainer idea really appealed to me; to be able to get some real, hands-on experience as part of the program was key in my choice. I have learned so much during my time at ABC, I am really looking forward to putting everything into practice. I have opened Dale's Dog Training Academy in Chesapeake, VA and am offering group classes and private lessons. I am also providing behavior consultation services to Centerville Animal Hospital in Chesapeake, VA. As a sideline, I make and sell wholesome dog treats called Woofies in a variety of flavors, using only healthy, human grade ingredients. Working with dogs and their owners, helping them build the kind of bond that I enjoy so much with my dog Wylie, is what I want to do. The rewards speak for themselves.

Jasmine Lugo
Recovery Tech at Spay and Neuter Clinic and Owner of "She-Ra's Ruff House"

My name is Jasmine Lugo. The reason why I chose Animal Behavior College is because I liked the flexibility in their curriculum. I also loved how they have a helpful staff that would respond to questions quickly and always in a polite and helpful way. My experience throughout the program was great. The book work allowed me to work at my own pace and even the Study Guides were a helpful part of the curriculum. The best part I have to say was the externship portion. The hands-on experience where I learned about all the different techniques was great. I plan on opening my own business and working on training dogs. I’d like to expand to other areas such as doggie daycare, pet sitting, and dog walking. I also want to go and continue school in the medical aspect to better my knowledge in that way. I love to work with any breed of dog. I currently volunteer to walk dogs for the ARF House located in Chicago. I work with their shelter dogs. I'm also working at the Paws Spay and Neuter Clinic as a recovery tech.

Marian Baer
Owner of "Leo's Dog Training"

All my life I have loved dogs and enjoyed working with people to solve problems. When it was time for me to start a business, I knew it was going to be with dogs. I did my research and came across the Animal Behavior College program. I was attracted to ABC because of the challenging, well-structured curriculum that included hands-on training through the externship portion of the program. This was a great experience and it worked out very well for me. I learned a lot of information and gained a lot of experience that helped me out with my own dogs. This training enabled me to start my own business, “Leo’s Dog Training.” Leo is a miniature dachshund that came into my life when he was 8 weeks old. He has been through the whole experience with me from the beginning and we have learned a lot together. Thank you to all the dogs I have worked with, the ABC staff, and Joan Dandy. These people have all helped and supported me through the Animal Behavior College program.

Tammy Mills

I have ALWAYS loved animals. As a kid, I drove my parents crazy bringing home every stray dog around and constantly begging for my own horse. I spent hours teaching my dogs tricks and just hanging out with my animals. Once I was married my husband pretty much accepted the fact that if he married me he was getting me plus at least a dog or two. I've known my whole life that I wanted a career doing something with animals but never really had the opportunity to pursue that dream. I started working in the corporate world over 25 years ago and have never been truly happy with my career path. Like a lot of people, I looked forward to Fridays and payday but knew that I had not found my "passion" in life.

About four years ago, after the death of my Bassett Hound of 11 years, I acquired a new Cocker Spaniel puppy. I started working with a trainer who was absolutely wonderful and as I watched her "loving and enjoying" her career, she inspired me. I decided to get a second puppy and started training them both. During that time I had also signed up as a volunteer with the local shelter and my love and passion for dogs seemed to grow as I saw how many were abandoned and given up without good reason. I decided to step out of my comfort zone and started researching dog training schools.

ABC caught my eye because of their positive approach and the fact that I could take my classes while still working at my full time job. I called them to get more information and was pleased with all the answers they gave me. I signed up and jumped in head first! I enjoyed my classes from day one. After each test, I couldn’t wait to move on to the next chapter. My experience with my mentor trainer was great. She taught me a lot and shared lots of useful info with me along the way. I'm confident that she and l will continue to keep in touch. I graduated with Honors thanks to her and the wonderful staff at ABC who encouraged me along the way. I started working part time at PetCo immediately and am also teaching classes and private lessons on my own. I plan, in the near future, to make dog training my full time career. Thank you ABC for helping me to accomplish my goals and work toward achieving my life-long dreams.

Michelle Hall
Daycare Provider and Owner of "Pawsitive K-9 Academy"

My name is Michelle Hall, and I have always been an animal lover ever since I can remember. There was never a time when I was growing up that I didn’t have a dog. I can remember playing with them all the time. I don’t recall doing much with training them at that time but I just remember having so much fun with them. As an adult I have owned several breeds of dogs. Right now I own a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier (Savanah) and I am fostering a Shepherd/Lab mix (Wally), and am in the process of adopting him soon. Since the passing of my Shepherd/Chow mix due to cancer in September, 2007 at the age of 8 ½ years, I have registered with several rescues in my area fostering dogs and training them to make them more adoptable.

When I got my Wheaten Terrier about 1 ½ years ago, I immediately found a very reputable trainer in my area. I started out with a couple of private lessons then changed over to group classes. I enjoyed it so much that I knew I wanted to pursue a career in dog training and problem behaviors. I did a search on the internet and found a whole slew of dog training schools. Most of them didn’t amount to anything worth looking into. When I came across Animal Behavior College I knew this was the school for me.

It took me a couple of weeks to decide to enroll in the school. I am a very busy person (as everyone is these days), and I run a daycare out of my home. I have very little time to myself as I also have a 2 year old. I thought this college would be great for me because my time is very limited. It worked out great doing my studies during the children’s nap time and after my little guy went to bed at night. The externship and my volunteer work was my favorite part of this program. All of the dogs that I worked with during my volunteer work at the shelter have been adopted.

After applying all of the things I learned from ABC and from Savanah’s trainer I am happy to tell everyone that Savanah passed her CGC/TDI in June, 2007. I was so proud. I look forward to applying what I have learned through ABC to my clients and their dogs, and working with people and helping them to make their dogs an enjoyable part of their family. I have started my own business, Pawsitive K-9 Academy. You can visit my website at http://www.pawsitivek9academy.com.

I would recommend this college to anyone that was interested in becoming a dog trainer. My program manager was the best, very helpful and patient.

Thank you ABC for helping me to fulfill my dream and be happy with my new career!

Amber Johnson
Veterinary Technician

I was looking for something a little more in my life and I had been thinking about dog training. When I came across ABC and thought, 'This is perfect!' ABC was a great place to learn. The schedule was flexible and I learned a lot in the intensive curriculum. I am currently in school for Veterinary Technology, and I will graduate in May 2008. I plan on working in a clinic for a while and doing some training on the side. I will eventually open my own boarding facility, training center and rescue. Thank you ABC for giving me the chance to start the career I've always dreamed of!

Deborah Muise
Proposal Writer and Owner of "The Idle Dog"

I was very influenced by Cesar Milan when his program began, and adopted many of his techniques with my 2 cavaliers. I also became aware of other methods available to dog trainers, and decided to study everything I could find. When I found myself unemployed for the first time, I shopped for a dog training learning experience that would provide the best education, and decided that ABC would fit the bill. My husband and I also take care of a 5 year old male Maltese regularly. I have had a border collie, a mini wire-haired dachshund, and a pit bull mix, a cherry headed conure, and many tolerant cats.

I chose ABC because of the hand-on requirements of their program. I knew that an education in dog training would mean very little if it was entirely academic. ABC's program is very comprehensive and well organized. The lessons are in logical order. The best part was the schedule since I knew ahead of time when each chapter test would be required. That schedule kept me slowly headed toward completion and my goal of certification as a dog trainer. I especially liked the externship at a local no-kill shelter, and my mentor sessions with an experienced dog trainer. I learned a tremendous amount just by watching and listening to her, and even though my required time at the shelter is over, I still volunteer there once a week.

I have several ideas for dog-related businesses. My immediate plans are to expand my little dog day care business in my home, and to offer dog training services on a private, issue-solving basis for people who have already requested my services. I plan to advertise locally.

I think animals, especially dogs, have a strong, undeniable attachment to humans. The relationship between owner and dog is very emotional and vitally close. Humans get something they need very much from their relationships with their dogs. I don't think this phenomenon is fully understood, but I recognize its existence. I want to contribute to a greater understanding of the needs and motivations of the domestic dog, to improve the human - dog bond.

Ann King
Vet Practice Manager and Owner of "CompliantK9"

Although I have been known among friends as 'the dog lady' for 20 years, I didn't officially pursue my passion of all things dog until relatively recently when I went to re-enter the workforce as a technology marketing professional and found I just couldn't conjure up any excitement about it. At age 40, I felt I owed it to myself and my family to spend my time in a capacity that not only brought me joy, but also put me in a position to help others. I have always trained my own dogs, as well as the dogs of my friends, and I've always been active with my local shelters and rescues. I stumbled across the Animal Behavior College website and within minutes of perusing the content had an epiphany about my destiny - I would combine my passion for dogs with my natural people skills and actually get paid for doing something I love! I chose to enroll in the ABC program because it taught a method of training I myself had used with my own dogs, and it provided a concise and logical framework that would serve as an excellent foundation for launching my own training business. My experience with the program was wonderful - the pace was excellent, the content was presented in an interesting fashion, and I had access to 'real people' if I needed them. Toward the end of my certification, I felt confident enough to launch my training business 'CompliantK9' and was able to hit the ground running. It's been a fantastic journey. Thank you ABC!

Maureen Warren
Avid Volunteer, Foster Mom and Dog Trainer

In April of 1991, I adopted my first dog, Brandy. She turned 16 years old this past April. In 2002 my husband Ron was diagnosed with cancer. We decided to get a puppy when we found out the news. We adopted our second dog, Rascal (a boxer mix). Not only did Rascal comfort Ron through his cancer but she also made Brandy young again.

In 2004 I began volunteering with a German Shepherd rescue. Ron and I became a foster for the first time with a three month old German Shepherd, Jake. I knew the day I picked him up I was going to adopt him. He had many anxiety issues. I also began volunteering with BFPA in 2004. I got a call from a friend in September of 2004 who said that a Rottweiler was surrendered after being on a tie-out for 6 years. We took him to the vet for the first time in his life. His collar was embedded into his neck so we had to cut the collar off. His name is Kane and today he weights 135 pounds. Of course we had to find Kane a roommate. We were going to try to foster so Kane could have a playmate and of course we ended up adopting a cattle dog that is two years old named Avery.

In April of 2004 there was a puppy mill bust in Sanford, NC. A group from ALDF (Animal League Defense Fund) came and seized 350 dogs. Ron and I heard about this and began volunteering with ALDF. A Real Estate company donated a warehouse so ALDF could house all the dogs that were seized. It was named “Halls of Hope.” Ron and I started volunteering the first weekend the dogs were there. It was the most overwhelming feeling I ever had in my life. Without hesitation Ron and I began to help in whatever area we could. Each weekend after the dogs settled in, you could tell they began to feel somewhat at ease. The case is still in appeals and all the dogs are in limbo in foster homes. We have a beautiful dog (Bulldog/Boxer mix) named Katie who we are currently fostering.

I’ve been in the corporate world for 27 yrs now and in April of 2004 I decided to train dogs. I found ABC on-line in my search. The best part of ABC’s program was the externship. What I plan on doing now is working with the Wake County Animal Shelter to help them keep their return rate down of dogs that have been adopted. I have offered to them on a volunteer basis to go to adopter’s homes if they need leadership on basic training with their new addition so they don’t feel overwhelmed and think they have to return the dog to the shelter. My long-term goal is to have my own business training dogs.

Jessica Wheatcraft
Psychologist and Dog Trainer

My love affair with dogs began at a very young age, and I spent a lot of my free time as a child playing with the family dogs in our backyard. I realized I had a knack for working with dogs and when I was 11 years old I began offering dog walking services to the neighbors. I charged $0.10 per half hour because I didn’t know what to really charge and all I wanted to do was spend time with more dogs anyways! When I reached my senior year in high school I decided to do my required volunteer hours at the local shelter. It was there I saw the awful truth about pet over-population, and I became determined to try and help make a difference for the wonderful dogs that simply needed a second chance. I started volunteering at the adoption events on weekends, helping find new homes for several dogs.

I moved to San Diego to pursue a degree in Psychology and after I got settled in I began searching for a dog of my own to adopt. After months of searching I found a wonderful pit bull named Harley who stole my heart the moment I met her. I adopted her on the spot. Harley’s rough background caused her to have a lot of anxiety and I realized it would be a good idea to work with a professional trainer to get her started on the right track. I was referred to Nan Arthur, a positive reinforcement clicker trainer with years of experience. Harley and I loved doing clicker training and she made a complete turn around.

Later that year I began volunteering for Pit Bull Rescue San Diego, doing everything from fundraising to fostering. It was then that it dawned on me that I would be able to save the lives of more dogs by becoming a dog trainer because I would be helping to prevent the problems that landed them in the shelter in the first place. I contacted Nan Arthur and discussed my options. She recommended Animal Behavior College as the way to go to get my certification. I loved the flexibility of the program and that it focused on positive reinforcement training. When the externship portion came around I specifically requested to work with Nan and was thrilled when I was paired up with her. I learned so much by applying my learned skills to real life situations such as helping out with her group classes and attending private lessons with her.

I was shocked when Nan asked me to work for her before I even graduated! Another fabulous opportunity came a few weeks later when Pit Bull Rescue San Diego asked me to join their board team as their behaviorist/trainer. I jumped right in and started a free foster obedience class for all the dogs in our program so they would have a better chance at being adopted. I love being a dog trainer and I wake up every day knowing I am doing what I love most, and to me that’s priceless.

Richard Hörst
UPS Driver and Owner of "Harmony Mountain Retrievers"

I am an avid bird hunter possessing a desire to train retrievers for clients. Once I made the decision to do this, I sought a dog training certification program that focused not only on common obedience training using positive methods, but also one that would offer problem solving solutions. ABC was the answer to my search. I have lived with retrievers most of my adult life and am well aware of the drive behind the retrieving breeds.

ABC has motivated me to work toward titling my own dogs, thereby proving my ability to do the same for clients. In just a few hunt tests, my standard poodle and I are ½-way to her North American Hunting and Retrieving title and ¾-way to her AKC hunting title.

Terrilynn Palumbo
Dental Assistant and Owner of “Sinopa Shiba Dog Training and Canine Massage”

Animal Behavior College has been a wonderful way to get me started on the right track to becoming an animal trainer. I researched many dog training schools and found ABC to be very affordable. Additionally, the program contains the most current techniques to best educate any motivated potential student in the positive motivation technique of dog training.

I found the staff of ABC to be knowledgeable about all aspects of the program. They were all very supportive of me while in the program. They were easily accessible to answer questions or talk with me about concerns I had about the different stages of the program.

As a result of graduating from ABC, I have begun my own business. Eventually, I hope to be able to run my business full-time so that I may leave my current position as a dental assistant in a dental office.

I am a recent graduate of DeSales University with a dual degree with honors in Social Work and Psychology and have been able to blend both my loves of working with people and their pets to form my new business. ABC has given me both the training tools and business tools to help make my business successful. Thanks to ABC for a wonderful experience.

Erin Camara
Administrative Assistant

I have grown up with animals my whole life. I have been an Administrative Assistant for 22 years. In the last few years I realized that I was tired of the corporate world. I wanted to do something that I love. I have heard people once in awhile say “I love my job” and I thought, "I want to be able to say that." I started thinking about the things that I like and dogs came to mind. I have always loved animals, especially dogs, so why not do something that I love? ABC jumped out at me because of the flexibility of doing it on your own time. I looked around and did not see many programs that were this in depth and also affordable.

This course has really helped me grow as a person, especially the volunteer portion of the program. When I found out I had to work with shelter dogs, I thought there is no way I can do that. I can’t even go into a pet store without tearing up. Somehow I found that inner strength and knew that what I was doing was going to help these dogs find a good home. It was a very rewarding experience. My dream is to one day walk into a shelter and take every dog with me!

ABC has really helped me with my own dogs as well. This is my 5 year old, Pomeranian/Finnish Spitz mix, Tawnee and my new 5 month old Pomeranian puppy, Peaches.

Finding your passion is a gift! I plan to continue my education in this field by attending workshops and would like to take more courses through ABC if offered.

Thanks ABC for this life changing experience!
